Gouldian finches are not ideal for anybody starting out in keeping/breeding finches, Gouldian finches are more challenging than the likes of Zebra or Bengalese finches. I would not advise anybody keeping them as an introduction to foreign finches

Experience with less nervous finches is advisable. I kept canaries, Bengalese and Zebras before I ventures info the world of Gouldian’s

Gouldian finches are better suited for experienced owners than beginners because they can be more challenging. Things to consider before buying a Gouldian finch:

My advice would be to buy off and experienced breeder, visit their bird room and ask what food and supplement’s they have been given and if they have been kept at a minimum temperature, moving to a colder environment can be fatal.

I personally only buy birds that are fully moulted and look lively. Gouldian finches don't develop their most adult plumage until they are between eight months and one year old, I have known some to take longer.

Some telltale signs of an unfit bird

  • Fluffed up
  • Head under one of its wings
  • Bald patches
  • Appear to be asleep
